PSS has recently completed a project, delivering offshore safety system data into a client's onshore historian in line with IEC 62443 principles for zone segregation and conduit security.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 🔓 : transmit safety-critical data into the historian without a network connection near the safety system. Under IEC 62443, the safety system sits in its own security zone, and anything leaving it needs a properly secured conduit — a standard network link wasn't a viable option.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🔒 : dedicated read-only serial links from each safety controller into a local server, forming a controlled conduit rather than a shared network path, with data then routed and firewalled through conventional infrastructure for the rest of the journey onshore. Serial protects the boundary that matters most; standard infrastructure handles the rest.
A practical example of applying zones and conduits to achieve operational visibility without compromising the systems it depends on.
